Hello Jimmy,

Regarding the comment we received on FL27022.1 and FL27022.2, I do not agree that the Code prescribes D7147 for evaluation of these products. Your selection of a Method 2 evaluation was appropriate. The title of Section 2303.5.2 is “Test standard for joist hangers and connectors”. The Scope of D7147 states, “This method is intended for use with devices used to connect joists, beams, and girders together. These devices are commonly described as joist hangers.” The intended geometry for this test is further described by Figure 2 of the standard:

As we discussed, our application was for a product which forms a connection between a roof truss and a wall top plate, in which the dead load is transferred by bearing. It’s a different connection by name, purpose, and functional geometry. Therefore, it is my opinion that a joist hanger test cannot be claimed to be prescribed by Code for the connection evaluated. ASTM D1761, which we selected and used, is also referenced by Code for wood connections and has broader application than D7147. I am available today and tomorrow for any further discussion that may be necessary.
